Popcorn Poppin' Month: The Story Behind Every Bag

Around here, October hits a little differently. Sure, it’s National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, but to us, it’s a celebration of our roots. Popcorn isn’t just what we make, it’s the reason Palo came to be.

We’ve been popping kernels since 1963, holding fast to a process that hasn't changed in over 60 years. Every single bag carries a piece of that history, so this month, we’re popping open the archives to tell the real story of how it all began.

1963: A Cart, A Few Taverns, and Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Palo Popcorn didn't start as a company with a plan. It started small, with popcorn hand-delivered to corner taverns around Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Think about what that actually looked like: no big factory, no national distribution, just fresh popcorn made in small batches, dropped off at the same neighborhood spots week after week because people kept asking for more.

When you start like that, there is nowhere to hide. The popcorn simply had to be good enough to make an impression and consistent enough to keep folks asking for another bag. More than six decades later, we still measure every batch by that exact same standard.

Same Popping Process, Six Decades Later

If you walked into our factory today, you would recognize the playbook from 1963.

It starts with pure coconut oil, popped slow and deliberate for that deep, homemade richness. Then comes real cheddar, coating every kernel so you never hit a dry or boring bite. Most importantly, it means a small-batch popping process with eyes on the batch every step of the way. Doing things this way takes more time and way more effort, but we never found a shortcut worth taking. That was true in 1963, and it is true now.

That is the real heart of National Popcorn Poppin' Month for Palo. It is a straight line drawn from those early Wisconsin tavern bars straight to the bag you are holding right now.

Still Made in Sheboygan Falls

Every batch of Palo Popcorn is still made in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, not far from where this whole thing started. That matters more than it might sound like it should.

The people making your popcorn today live in the same kind of communities this brand was built for. Many of them grew up nearby, shop at the same stores you do, and take real pride in what leaves the building every day. That's the same sense of community this business started with, and we've kept it on purpose.

Every Bag Still Carries the Same Story

National Popcorn Poppin' Month gives us a good reason to slow down and say all this out loud, but truthfully, every bag has been telling this story all along. A cart became a facility. A few tavern regulars became friends from coast to coast. What never moved an inch is the care that goes into each batch.

So this month, when you're tearing into a bag of Palo, know you're part of something that started over sixty years ago with people who just wanted to make something worth sharing. That's still exactly what we're doing, one bag at a time.
